Reconstruction of roads in Kenyan capital Nairobi to cost US$ 9m

Plans are underway to reconstruct several roads in Kenyan capital Nairobi at a  cost of US$ 9m, Governor Evans Kidero has announced, adding that the city roads will be repaired and this is according to the county government’s Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan.

The reconstruction of roads in Kenyan capital Nairobi will significantly reduce present and future vehicle operating costs, journey times and improve traffic safety.

The project construction will also encourage private sector involvement in the maintenance of infrastructure, strengthen monitoring or control of road maintenance activities and provide basic institutional support for road maintenance planning.

The roads initiative has come after the county government repaired the streets lights that have seen crime levels drop drastically from 1,200 incidents per month to 300 and also led to Nairobi being a safe 24 hour economy.

The governor however pointed out that the project has been facing challenges due to vandalism.

“We take cognisance of the fact that vandalism is rampant especially in the up market estates such as Hurlingham, Kilimani, Woodley and various roads, including Ngong, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Dennis Pritt and Kirichwa. These are some of the roads worst hit by street light vandalism. We are spending a lot of money replacing equipment and this should not be the case,” he said.

Currently, a total number of 433 streets out of 783 have been installed with lights and this will definitely help in curbing the crime menace that occurs in the capital city. More lights will be put up in Njiru, Ruai, Kayole and their evirons.
